Hockey won’t be the only thing lighting up the FlyDSA arena next week. As part of their annual Be Bright, Be Seen campaign South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership will be at the Sheffield Steelers vs Nottingham Panthers game on 27 December with plenty of free (yes, free!) accessories to help fans stay as visible as possible when walking, jogging or cycling on dark nights. We’ll be asking spectators to show off their hi-vis before the teams face off.

The Be Bright, Be Seen campaign encourages pedestrians and cyclists to wear brightly coloured or fluorescent clothing which show up well in daylight and at dusk. They are also advised to wear reflective accessories, such as high-visibility jackets or sashes, so that they are more visible in car headlights at night.

Safer Roads Manager Joanne Wehrle said “We’re thrilled that we can join the Steelers for one of their biggest games of the year, and we’re looking forward to seeing the arena lit up with bright and reflective stickers, shoe lights, arm bands, ruck sack covers, caps, zip pulls and reflective bags.

“This is a great opportunity for us to share this important safety message, and encourage people who have driven the distance to see the Steelers to look out for vulnerable road users on their journeys home, and every journey after that.

“And we’d be remiss, given the ice theme, not to remind people about driving in wintry weather. As the players know all too well, it takes a lot longer to stop on the ice, and the same is true when driving on icy roads – up to ten times longer! So adapt your driving to suit the conditions, reduce your speed and leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front.

“There’s plenty more advice on our website at and on Twitter @safer_roads
