Keep an emergency kit in your car, especially if you’re going on a long journey:

• Tow rope

• A shovel

• Wellington boots

• A hazard warning triangle (two if possible)

• De-icing equipment – ice scraper and de-icer

• First aid kit (in good order)

• A working torch and spare batteries

• A car blanket

• Warm clothes and blankets

• Emergency rations (including hot drink in a flask – non-alcoholic, of course)

• Fully charged mobile phone (plus portable battery charger)

• Hi-viz jacket

• Jump start cables

• Sunglasses
