Road safety advice
With fewer daylight hours, wet and wintery conditions and reduced visibility, everyone faces extra risks on our roads.
We are asking all road users to play their part in preventing collisions and casualties by making additional safety checks such as checking car and bike lights are working.
Car and van drivers are encouraged to be extra vigilant and on the lookout for more vulnerable road users to reduce the chances of a collision. Under the Hierarchy of Road Users, those who pose a greater risk of harm, have a greater responsibility to keep others safe.
Additionally, people who are walking, wheeling and cycling, are encouraged to wear something bright and reflective so they are more visible to other road users in low light conditions.
Always use a crossing where possible and wait for the lights to change to ensure drivers are preparing to stop.
The key is that no matter how we travel, we all have a duty to take extra steps to ensure our safety on the roads at this time of year.
A safe system needs safe speeds, safe vehicles, safe road users and safe roads.

Is your vehicle safe? Preparation for the dark nights and mornings:
-
Drivers and motorcycle riders are advised to check that their headlights are working and tyres are in good condition order so that they can be prepared for darker and wetter journeys.
-
Cyclists should consider making sure that their bicycle is in good condition and that brakes, gears, lights and reflectors are in working order.
-
Remember to drive in a way that is appropriate to the conditions of the road - in such a way that allows you to slow down or stop safely if required.
