Drink a little...risk a lot...
Nationally in 2022, an estimated 1,920 people were killed or seriously injured in a collision where drink driving was a factor.

As we head into the festive season, SYSRP partners are reminding members of the public that any amount of alcohol can affect your driving, putting you at increased risk of being involved in a crash.

A partnership spokeswoman said: “Last December, South Yorkshire Police arrested and charged 118 law breakers for driving while over the alcohol limit, unfit through drugs or failing to provide a sample.

“We are hoping that by reminding people of what they are risking, they will choose to only drive sober this Christmas.”

THINK!’s latest campaign is aimed at young men who are over-represented in drink drive casualties and are less likely to see the behaviour as risky.

Research shows that one in two young male drivers say they intend to be sensible but often get carried away when socialising.

“This campaign challenges young male drivers’ perceptions around personal limits, by raising awareness that even a little bit of alcohol can put you and your licence at risk which can in turn impact on your freedom, social life and even your job,” added the spokeswoman.

“Worse still, you are increasing the risk of injuring yourself or others.”

The national campaign will run across social media channels, billboards within 100 metres of pubs in England and Wales, and beermats and washroom posters in pubs and bars to influence risky behaviour in the moment.

SYSRP is also working with local pubs and bars to share messages on their own social media sites and hand out beer mats with a QR code linked to an on-line South Yorkshire travel planner.

The aim is to encourage people to make a plan, book taxis, take it in turns to be a designated driver and avoid driving while over the limit the following morning.

The spokeswoman said: “All we want is for people to have a good time and to get home safely this Christmas.

“By working with the night-time economy, we are reminding everyone to put travel plans in place before heading out, to avoid making a bad decision after a few drinks.

“We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Christmas.”
