All eyes on speed for national day of action
Excess speed is one of the leading contributory factors in serious and fatal collisions.
On Friday (11 July), as part of National Community Speedwatch Day, passionate volunteers will descend across South Yorkshire to help highlight the dangers of driving or riding at an inappropriate speed.
There are currently 11 active Community Speedwatch (CSW) groups across South Yorkshire with 85 members giving their personal time to help create safer roads.
The event aims to highlight the important work of the groups and start a conversation about speed in a bid to change drivers’ behaviour.
South Yorkshire’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Kilvinder Vigurs, praised the volunteers for their contribution to safer roads.
“One casualty on our roads is one too many and we know from the statistics that excess speed is a leading causation factor in many crashes.
“By joining a local Speedwatch group, these volunteers are playing a significant role in trying to change driver behaviour and ultimately stop people from being hurt or killed, in a collision. We can’t thank them enough for their dedication to improving outcomes for all.
“In my role as Deputy Mayor and Chair of the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership, I have pledged my commitment to Vision Zero – a long-term ambition to end all road deaths,” added Kilvinder.
“Community Speedwatch is one of the many interventions taking place across our county to reduce the risks on our roads and make the system safer for all.”
During the past 12 months, volunteers have carried out more than 150 hours of speedwatch operations, with over 30,000 drivers having passed a CSW event while it was taking place.
Of those, 1,857 received warning letters about exceeding the speed limit.
While the volunteers can’t impose any criminal enforcement, the letters are an educational tool, reminding drivers of how speed can impact local communities and other road users’ safety.

South Yorkshire Police would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all our volunteers and their help in creating safer roads.
