Spotlight on road risk
Thirty-nine people lost their lives as the result of a collision on South Yorkshire roads in 2023. A further 802 people suffered serious or life-changing injuries.
This April, to raise awareness about road harm, police forces across the country are taking part in Operation Spotlight highlighting the leading contributory factors in serious and fatal crashes.
Drink and drug driving, using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt and speeding are known as the ‘Fatal Four’ offences which are statistically the most common contributory factors leading to death or serious injury in collisions.
Tackling these offences is daily business for South Yorkshire Police officers who will carry out a range of targeted enforcement activities as part of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) campaign.
The operational work will be supported by #Fatal4 themed educational messages which you can follow on @SYSaferRoads social media channels throughout April.
Members of the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) have committed to reducing road traffic casualties by adopting a multi-agency, Safe System approach.
