GETTING YOUR MIND IN GEAR

All this week South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is putting the spotlight on mental well-being as we prepare to follow the roadmap out of lockdown.

Our social media channels will focus on tips and suggestions on how to look after yourself, in a bid to help drivers, riders, pedestrians and all road users stay safe.

From mindfulness, to relaxation suggestions, the week-long campaign urges people to ensure they are fit enough to fully concentrate on the road and make safe decisions.

Joanne Wehrle, manager of SYSRP, said: “Many of us are dealing with additional anxiety and stress as we continue to manage the impact of the on-going pandemic.

“With so many aspects of our normal life on-hold, it’s no surprise that we’re struggling to sleep, feeling more tense and missing having some form of outlet.

“All this has a big impact on our focus and attention which is vital when we’re driving or using any other form of transport.

“We hope this week’s messaging will help people to think about their frame of mind before travelling – and remember that we are still only travelling for essential reasons.”

Yesterday (Monday 22 February), Prime Minister Boris Johnson set out the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown with many restrictions set to stay in place until next month at the earliest.

The ‘stay local’ law will remain until at least March 29 with plans unveiled to allow self-catering holidays from April 12 for single households.

“In the coming weeks, in particular when children return to the classroom, we will see a big surge in the amount of traffic on our roads,” added Joanne.

“It is so important that we all remember to use our roads safely both now, and in the months ahead, when restrictions are lifted.

“Please have a look at our mindfulness and well-being page for some easy tips and quick exercises to get your mind in gear for travel.

“Before setting off on your essential journey, we are asking you to observe your emotions and ask yourself ‘Am I in the right frame of mind to drive?’

“Mental health affects us all and we really want to help people feel ready and safe to travel as we all navigate our way out of lockdown.”

The dedicated Safer Roads’ website page features sections on mindfulness and safety information for all road-user types including cycling, walking and riding a powered-two-wheeler.
