SouthYorksWalks is a weekend dedicated to the pleasure of walking, and members of the public are being invited to celebrate the joy of walking and wheeling.
As part of the Mayor’s Year of Active Travel, this three-day celebration is all about moving more, moving differently, and sharing that experience with others. The Year of Active Travel is all about creating a healthier, happier South Yorkshire.
Incorporating walking or wheeling (using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, or even manual scooters and balance bikes) into your daily routine - just 30 minutes a day - can significantly boost your health.
Regular walking enhances cardiovascular fitness, strengthens bones and builds muscle. Plus, the mental health benefits are undeniable. Studies show that regular walking can reduce the risk of depression by a third and release endorphins that improve energy levels, concentration, and sleep patterns.
A spokesperson for SYMCA said: “We don’t mind where you’re walking - whether you’re going for a short local walk, or a longer one with friends and family – we want to see your pictures or videos to help us celebrate the power of walking.
“We’re encouraging everyone to walk, or wheel, during our SouthYorksWalks weekend, and to share their pictures or videos using the hashtag #SouthYorksWalks.
“Whether it's a quick stroll, a walk to a local event or to see friends or family, or a fun exercise session, just get out and enjoy the fresh air. Even if it’s raining!”
