IT'S NATIONAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK
Teams from across South Yorkshire are shouting out for ‘Safe Roads for All’ as part of the UK’s biggest annual road safety campaign.
Starting on Monday (14 November), National Road Safety Week aims to bring together communities and professionals to speak up for everyone's right to make safe and healthy journeys on our roads.
Organised by charity Brake, the campaign will raise awareness of key areas of road safety, including safe vehicles and speeds, the recent updates to the Highway Code and the new hierarchy of road users.
And the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is supporting the ambition to keep all road users safe, no matter who they are or how they travel.
Tom Finnegan Smith, chair of the SRP Strategic Board, said: “This campaign underpins all of the work we are doing as a partnership to help people to make safe, healthy and sustainable journeys across our county.
“Our local authority road safety teams, elected members and our partners in the emergency services are working every day to reduce casualties, prevent collisions and protect communities from the tragedy of losing a loved one unnecessarily.
“We are proud to support Brake’s work and to take this opportunity to join organisations across the UK in making road safety a top priority creating Safe Roads For All.”
In 2021, 36 people lost their lives on South Yorkshire roads and 660 were seriously injured.
As part of the Partnership’s on-going strategy to prevent casualties and collisions, local authority road safety teams will be delivering school sessions and South Yorkshire Police’s proactive road crime officers will carrying out daily enforcement.
There will also be a road safety event for students at Doncaster College on Tuesday 15 November and all activity will be supported by the Partnership’s social media channels. Themes will include active travel, the Safe System, shared responsibility and the fatal four.
