£2 MILLION FOR DONCASTER TRAVEL

The scheme – which is delivered as part of the Transforming Cities Fund – will allow for new walking and cycling routes to be created, which will connect Omega Boulevard to Moorends along Field Side, King Edward Road and Marshland Road.

The route will connect users between Field Side and King Edward Road along quiet streets which was the preferred option following community consultation in July 2022. The works will also include the installation of two new pedestrian crossings within Moorends, a community priority highlighted during the consultation.

The plans follow community consultations conducted in the summer of 2022, which looked at routes residents would prefer to be installed should the funding be successful. Cllrs Blackham, Durant and Houlbrook have been involved heavily with the scheme including four public consultation events, meetings and walkabouts with officers along the route.

On top of the creation of the new active travel routes and improved pedestrian routes, carriageway resurfacing will take place on selected roads, along with improvements to street lighting and dropped crossings.

Cllr Joe Blackham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure and Enforcement at Doncaster Council, said: “This investment will help connect residents with further employment, education and retail opportunities, which will strengthen the local economy whilst also bringing with it strong health and environmental benefits to the local area.

“We anticipate that works on this project will start in April and be finished in September 2023 with over 3km of new cycle infrastructure added to the borough. I want to thank residents in the Thorne and Moorends areas, in particular for participating in our consultation and helping us pinpoint exactly where the routes would be best placed and of most use.

“Active Travel offers many benefits to our residents and we are exciting by the many routes and schemes becoming operational across the entire borough.”
