YOUNG OWLS' ROAD SAFETY TEAM TALK

Youth footballers tackled a skills test with a difference when they took part in an interactive session on road safety.

Sheffield Wednesday’s under 18 Youth Academy players had the goal of completing Drive Start – a free workshop for novice and pre-drivers focussing on subjects including personal responsibility and risks on the road.

Delivered and funded by South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP), team members discussed the misconception that driving is easy as well as the consequences of unsafe decisions.

Dan Potts, Head of Academy Education and Player Care, said: “We were delighted to host Safer Roads as part of our life skills programme.

“Road safety is critical for our young academy players as they fall into the at-risk 17-24 age group who typically will be new to driving.

“It is so important that they understand the hazards and risks on the roads as well as the potential consequences for their careers and it was great to see how engaged they were in the session.

“All our apprentices receive the Drive Start workshop whilst playing for the Academy.”

Drive Start is available as a classroom session as well as an on-line e-module.
