Today, rain will continue to move swiftly eastwards across the region, perhaps turning to sleet or snow for a time before clearing into the North Sea this afternoon. We could perhaps see some small, patchy accumulations on high ground above 200m and perhaps 2 – 5 cm for areas above 300m, so primarily the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.

A few showers may then develop across western parts later this afternoon and evening. With the temperature falling close to freezing overnight we could see some patchy ice forming on any untreated surfaces, particularly in the west where we see the showers later this afternoon.

After a dry morning tomorrow, Storm Barra will bring strong winds and areas of locally heavy rain eastwards into the afternoon before clearing to the northeast later in the evening. This rain may turn to snow, especially over the higher ground (above 200m) where we could see 2-5 cm quite widely, possibly a bit more in places. 

This morning, the Met Office have updated the Yellow Snow Warning that was issued yesterday and it now includes western parts of South Yorkshire, as well as North and West Yorkshire. The warning remains valid from 1100 to 2359 and comes with a Very Low Likelihood of Medium Impacts.

With the wind increasing during Tuesday, we will see gusts of 45-50 mph quite widely and perhaps 55 – 65mph later in the afternoon and early evening along the coast. It is worth bearing in mind that the combination of these strong winds and the snow will cause blizzards with drifting and poor visibility in places, particularly over the highest routes.

The Yellow Wind Warning (Medium Likelihood of Low Impacts) to cover the potential impacts from the strong winds is valid from 0900 to 2359 on Tuesday. As the rain clears and the wind begins to ease overnight into Wednesday, we will see some showers, primarily focussed in the west of the region.
