With cycling taking centre stage at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is encouraging people to saddle up and give it a go.
 
This Thursday (5 August) is Cycle to Work Day - an annual event that promotes cycling as a form of commuting, regardless of people’s level of experience.
 
Organised by Love to Ride, anyone who fancies getting involved can sign up on-line or on social media and log their ride with prize giveaways throughout the day.
 
Joanne Wehrle, manager of SYSRP said: “Cycle to Work Day is for absolutely everyone. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t cycled for years or have never cycled before. It’s just about giving it a go.
 
“The aim of the day is to show how accessible cycling is as a method of commuting and to promote all of the benefits to both employers and employees.
 
“We fully support the Love to Ride initiative and would encourage anyone thinking about cycling to get involved and try it.”
 
Safer Roads’ very own cycling superhero Captain DynaMo will be cycling to work at the Lifewise Centre in Rotherham on Thursday to support the event and raise awareness about road safety issues.
 
He said: “There are more cyclists on our roads than ever and it’s everybody’s job to look out for each other.
 
“I want to remind drivers to look out for cyclists at all times of day and to make sure that you give riders a safe amount of space when overtaking.
 
“It’s also important that you slow down when passing so that we can all share the road safely.
 
“Give cyclists at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car. We recommend leaving a distance of at least 1.5m when overtaking a cyclist.”
