CRAFTY KEY WORKER 'ROLL' OF HONOUR

Creative primary school children have been celebrating their key worker heroes with a unique road safety-themed ‘roll’ of honour.

As part of a half-term craft challenge set by South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP), pupils were invited to take a break from their screens and make a mini version of someone special in the form of a ‘tube person’.

From NHS staff, school crossing patrols and teachers to police officers, police dogs and delivery drivers, the Safer Roads’ team was delighted by the key worker tributes and craft skills on show from more than 20 schools across the county.

Joanne Wehrle, SYSRP manager, said: “The entries to our craft competition were absolutely fantastic.

“Well done and a massive thank you to everyone who took part and sent us a photo of their creation. We were really touched by the variety of entries and occupations.

“Young people have clearly taken a lot of time to make their ‘tube people’ and to recognise our amazing key workers.

“There are definitely lots of very talented children out there.”

The challenge was set in partnership with Rotherham Council’s road safety team and the five winners were chosen by Cllr Emma Hoddinott. Those children will receive a bag of goodies including road safety resources. Everyone who took part will also be given a pencil and badge through their schools.

“Throughout the pandemic we’ve tried to come up with as many new ways as possible to engage with children and families on the subject of road safety,” added Joanne.

“As we’ve not been able to attend schools, we’ve developed our website to offer on-line lessons, quizzes, crafts and recipes because it’s so important to keep our families safe.

“Hopefully after Easter, we will be able to get back into assemblies and classrooms to resume our work with schools.

“In the meantime, please do check out our website and help get your children ready for the return of the school run next week.”
