South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is encouraging young people to ‘Ridefree’ during the current restrictions and improve their skills from the comfort of their own home.

Ridefree is a new on-line learning package developed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and Highways England.

It’s free to download and is aimed and those thinking of taking their Compulsory Basic Test – the minimum needed to ride a scooter or moped.

Joanne Wehrle, manager of SYSRP, said: “Unfortunately the Covid restrictions have impacted on all aspects of riding, including practical training.

“But it’s also given us more time to look at other aspects, which is why we are promoting the new online learning modules.

“This is completely free and a great way to keep your knowledge fresh if you are waiting to do your CBT, or if you’ve passed then it’s a great refresher.

The course covers everything from a short mock Highway Code test, assessing your hazard perception, to knowing the basic practical checks on a scooter or motorbike. 

It can be completed in one sitting, or you can dip in and out when time allows, completing different sections one at a time. You also get an individual certificate for completing the modules.

“Riding is not just about being able to stay upright on two wheels, but it’s also about understanding signs, road layouts, basic maintenance, hazard awareness, all of which will improve your enjoyment and safety when riding,” added Joanne.

“We always stress that the CBT is only the start of your journey when learning to ride a scooter or motorbike.”

Ridefree has been devised following a research project into the behaviour of young riders by the DVSA and Highways England, with the aim of helping them with the CBT.

The project has already won awards and is now being promoted nationally as an enhanced section to the normal CBT.
