EVERY DAY WITHOUT A ROAD DEATH
South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is supporting Project EDWARD – a national campaign working towards the goal of ‘every day without a road death’.

The week-long initiative, starting on Monday (17 October), will see road safety organisations across the UK showcase the work being done in their areas to reduce death and serious injury on the roads.

During the week – which coincides with a national Speed campaign - South Yorkshire Police will be running days of action including a safe pass operation and speed check sites as well as launching a new Community Speedwatch pilot.

The Partnership will support police activity with a social media campaign focussing on themes including speed, vehicle checks, road maintenance and drink driving.

Chair of the SYSRP Strategic Board Tom Finnegan Smith said: “We are proud to join colleagues from across the UK to support Project EDWARD and share as much information as possible that will help reduce casualties on our roads.

“This year’s theme – Changing Minds, Changing Behaviour – is what we as partners, seek to do on a daily basis because this is how we will prevent the unnecessary pain and suffering caused by collisions.”

Sadly in 2021, 36 people lost their lives on South Yorkshire roads and more than 600 people were seriously injured.

Project EDWARD will remind everyone why it is so vital to follow the rules of the roads including putting your mobile phone away while driving, sticking to the speed limit, wearing a seatbelt and never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Everyone has a role to play when it comes to making our roads safe, from our road users themselves to planners, educators and enforcers,” added Mr Finnegan Smith.

“Let’s work together to put an end to serious collisions on our roads.”

As part of Project EDWARD 2022, organisers will travel across the UK to promote examples of road safety initiatives. The focus of the tour will be around the themes ‘safe vehicles’, ‘safe road use’, ‘safe speeds’, ‘safe roads/roadsides’ and ‘post-crash care’.

The road trip will also feature guest appearances from industry experts who will take part in live webinars and podcasts.

Project EDWARD, which launched in 2016, is managed by Projects Zero and is backed by the Government, the emergency services, highways agencies, road safety organisations and British businesses.
