FIRE SERVICE SIGNS UP TO SUMMER SAFETY
Firefighters are helping to spread the road safety message by supporting a summer ThinkBike! campaign.
With more and more motorcyclists on our roads, drivers are being encouraged to look out for powered-two wheelers including taking extra time at junctions, when approaching bends and being aware of filtering riders.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue (SYFR) is backing the awareness campaign that sees signs displayed along high-priority routes – including Rivelin Valley Road in Sheffield.
Joanne Wehrle, manager of South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) said: “With the riding season well underway and ever-increasing numbers of motorcyclists on our roads, it’s vital that we all look out for each other.
“Nationally, around 10 motorcyclists are killed or seriously injured at junctions every day and we are working hard to remind all road users of the need to be aware of those around you.
“Rural roads are commonly used by motorcyclists which is why we are asking drivers to be vigilant, particularly at junctions or when turning, and for riders to be aware of their own safety, can you see what’s around that next bend?
“Think about the person behind the helmet – every rider is someone’s loved on. We need to all work together so that we do not put lives at risk.”
Current figures show that across the UK, motorcyclists are over-represented in the casualty stats with riders making up 1 per cent of total road traffic, but accounting for 19 per cent of all road user deaths.
In South Yorkshire in 2020, 161 motorcyclists were injured in a collision – making up 27 per cent of all casualties.
In a bid to help spread the word, firefighters from Red Watch at Rivelin Valley Fire Station are promoting the campaign with signs displayed directly outside the station.

Leanna Morton, Sheffield District Watch Manager said: “We are fully behind the campaign from a road-safety perspective but also as many of our officers are keen riders.
“Many of our stations are located on popular commuting or leisure riding routes so the signs will be a great reminder to all road users – especially around a busy time like the school summer holidays.
“With so many travellers on our networks, it’s vital that everyone gives the road their full attention at all times, no matter what mode of transport.
“That way we can reduce collisions and casualties across South Yorkshire’s roads, preventing unnecessary grief and pain for families.”
