To help motorcyclists be the best rider they can, Safer Roads has teamed up with with two local charities - Sheffield Advanced Motorcyclists (SAM) and Rotherham Advanced Motorcyclists (RAM) –to promote their training offers.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists’ (IAM) Advanced Rider certificate helps riders of all levels of experience by delivering training on positioning, speed, gears and acceleration in line with the Police Riders Handbook.
Joanne Wehrle, manager of SYSRP, said: “Whether it’s just for fun, travelling to work or to improve your mental well being, there are so many great things about riding a bike or scooter.
“In the current pandemic, we are seeing more and more people using their bikes so it’s perfect timing to put the spotlight on motorbikes and scooters.
“We are working with RAM and SAM because we want people to consider taking extra training and looking into the IAM Advanced Rider certificate which is one of the highest levels of achievement for civilian riders.
“We need to all work together to celebrate the diverse range of road users we are currently seeing and to ensure that we are all taking responsibility for each other’s safety.”
SAM and RAM are both members of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) which formed as a charity in 1956 and has over 100,000 members in the UK. Its sole purpose is to improve people’s driving and riding standards through education and tuition.
Our local groups provide everything from skills sessions to a busy social calendar of ride-outs and trips to everywhere from Whitby to Morocco.
Bernard Akers, from Rotherham Advanced Motorcyclists, said, “We are all volunteers who want to improve the riding skills and therefore the safety of riders in South Yorkshire whether they want to explore the countryside, travel around the world, or on their daily commute.
“Our members are from all corners of South Yorkshire and ride everything from sports bikes, tourers, naked street to adventure bikes. All makes and style of machine are welcome.”
Steve Brown, chairman of SAM, said "We welcome motorcycles of all sizes and riders of all abilities. Our aim is to assist riders get more out of their machine and our road network by being smoother, faster and safer."

SYSRP runs campaigns throughout the year to promote safety for scooter and motorbike riders via digital platforms and face-to-face engagement.
