WORLD CUP TRAVEL TACTICS
With the World Cup 2022 about to get underway in Qatar, road safety officers are reminding footy fans not to get caught offside when it comes to the law.

Matches will take place at times throughout the day and viewers enjoying a drink during the game are being urged to have ‘none for the road.’

The advice is to make a plan to make it home safe whether that’s a taxi, designated driver or public transport.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) said: “We hope everyone really enjoys watching the highly-anticipated World Cup competition.

“But if you're driving somewhere to watch, we just wanted to remind everyone of the need to get home safely.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol increases your chances of being involved in a collision and don’t forget, you could also still be over the drink-drive limit the morning after.

“No amount of alcohol is safe in your system. Think before you drink.”

Driving under the influence of alcohol could lead to being banned from driving, points added on your licence, an unlimited fine, or even imprisonment.

This will mean increased insurance costs, potential job loss and even restrictions on travel to other countries.

“With everything that's going on right now, with energy prices and the cost of living crisis, why make life harder?” added the spokeswoman.

“Many people think they will be ok the following morning but you could still be at risk of being over the limit.

“An average liver can process approximately one unit of alcohol per hour, starting one hour after drinking has stopped.

“This means that if someone drinks 12 units, it can take them roughly 13 hours to fully sober up.”

The advice from the Partnership is to make a plan to get home safe:
  • Book a taxi home from wherever you are watching the game
  • Leave the car at home and use public transport or walk home if possible
  • Book the following morning off work or use public transport
  • Take it in turns to be designated drivers
  • Stick to soft drinks so you can concentrate on the excellent football on show
