PLAN - DON'T RISK A BAN THIS CHRISTMAS
“Don’t let alcohol wreck your Christmas” – that’s the message from our emergency services as the festive season gets into full swing.

Members of the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) came together today to support a month-long campaign to target drink and drug drivers.

With one in 10 drivers found to be over the drink drive limit on local roads last December, partners are urging members of the public to stay safe this Christmas and protect lives by doing the right thing.

Simon Dunker, Area Manager for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue (SYFR) said: “We want everyone across the four districts to have a safe and happy Christmas.

“If you’re having a drink, leave the car at home – book a taxi, use public transport or agree on a designated driver.

“The last thing our officers want, is to be cutting you out of a crashed car and telling loved ones you are not coming home.

“Driving under the influence of drink or drugs puts lives at risk. The message is simple: have none for the road.”

In Great Britain in 2021, it is estimated that around 260 people were killed in a drink-drive collision. This accounts for around 17% of all fatalities.

The same year, a total of 6,740 people received some form of injury as the result of a drink-drive collision. This equates to around five per cent of all casualties – a statistic which is replicated across South Yorkshire.

Research shows that men, aged between 25 and 59, are more likely to be involved in a drink-drive collision. This is followed by 16 to 24-year-old men.

Partners are reminding road users that you could be imprisoned, banned from driving and face a fine if you’re found guilty of drink-driving.

A spokeswoman for SYSRP added: “Social situations and peer pressure can play a role in influencing individuals to drink and then drive.

“Some people may not have planned ahead for a designated driver or alternative transportation, leading them to make the risky decision to drive under the influence.

“Preventing drink and drug driving is a shared responsibility. As well as educating road users and enforcing the laws, we all have a role to play in making safe decisions.

“The aim of this campaign is to remind everyone of the potential consequences of drinking and driving, including the increased risk of collisions, injuries, legal consequences, and harm to oneself and others.”
