CAMPAIGN: TWO WHEEL SAFETY
South Yorkshire is joining a national campaign aimed at reducing the number of motor and pedal cyclists killed or seriously injured on our roads.

Data from National Highways show that peak months for motorcycle collisions are April and September.

With the improving weather and many riders getting their bikes back out for the Spring months, the National Police Chiefs’ Council is spearheading a two-week education drive starting on Monday 4 April.

Joanne Wehrle, manager of South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP), said: “We are pleased to be joining forces across the UK to put the spotlight on how we can improve road safety for all drivers and riders.

“The Partnership already delivers a wide range of interventions and publicity around ‘Two Wheel’ safety which will fit perfectly with this campaign.

“Our efforts will focus on engaging with members of the public to raise awareness and improve safety, no matter how you travel.”

One of the campaign’s main aims is to educate motorcyclists and cyclists about the benefits of having the correct skills, knowledge and personal protective equipment to ride safely.

“We recently ran a campaign highlighting the need for motorcyclists to wear ‘All The Gear, All The Time’ and will be sharing this artwork with training schools, dealerships and colleges,” added Joanne.

“We also have our #filterfriendly bumper stickers, our #BtheBest snoods that promote advanced training, and we are about to launch our new ‘BOLT’ initiative for young riders around bike maintenance.

“This work compliments our YouTube ‘Mech’ It Better’ series that covers a wide range of topics such as oil, battery and fuse checks for motorcylists.”

During the second week of the initiative, Safer Roads will host BikerDown! - a free two-hour session that provides motorbike and scooter riders with basic first-aid skills and awareness of road traffic collision management. Think Bike posters will be also displayed around Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

“This campaign is about speaking to all road users, not just those on two wheels, for example encouraging drivers to take extra time at junctions and for everyone to familiarise themselves with the latest changes to the Highway Code,” added Joanne.

“There are things we can all do, no matter how we travel, that will ultimately reduce collisions and casualties, whether this is extra training or changing our behaviour.

“We all need to understand how our decision making could impact on the safety of a more vulnerable road user and vice-versa.

“Our social media channels will be dedicated to this subject so please have a look @SYSaferRoads and hopefully we can come together to make our roads safer for all.”

The Safer Roads YouTube channel hosts a wide range of information on cycling, powered-two-wheelers as well as all our campaigns.
